To sign up for the PADI Instructor Development Course and Instructor Exam, you will need to be either a PADI Divemaster or PADI Assistant Instructor (or equivalent).

You will also need a current medical (no more than 12 months old), a current first aid certificate (no more than 24 months old) and a minimum of 100 logged dives under your belt!

You need to have been certified for a minimum of 6 months (or in other words, your Open Water Diver Course should have been more than 6 months ago) and you will need to get certified as a PADI EFR Instructor (which is part of our IDC program).

Have you completed your Divemaster or Assistant Instructor core courses with a different agency? PADI recognise most other training agencies, such as SSI or RAID, so you can simply cross over to the PADI system by booking onto this course. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

We have taught 18 year olds all the way up to 70 year olds to dive, so don’t think you need to be superfit to participate in this course!

You have to be comfortbale in the water of course and be able to carry the equipment (including a tank and weights).

All participants need to get a dive medical before the course. Simply contact a SPUMS Diving to get your diving medical done. We highly recommend Dr Anne Sampson from Hallett Cove for dive medicals (Mobile: 0418 803 250).

The minimum number of participants for us to run the PADI Instructor Course is three.

The minimum age to do this course with us is 18 years old.

Whether you’re sick, got COVID19, need to isolate, haven’t completed the PADI eLearning in time or can’t make the proposed course dates anymore, you can reschedule at any time before or during the course for any reason.

To reschedule, we will charge a rescheduling fee of $499. As soon as a course spot is booked, we reserve pool lanes and a company van, book in the instructor for all course dates and reserve the required gear and classrooms for your course. The rescheduling fee will be used to cover the costs.

The rescheduling fee only applies if we can’t find alternative dates for your course group. Usually we can simply reschedule one or two sessions to solve a short time issue like temporary sickness or a COVID19 case.

The theory for the PADI Instructor Development Course is delivered through PADI eLearning. The eLearning is included in the course fees.

The theory for this course takes approximately 30 – 40 hours to complete.

The main thing to remember is that we are going to get wet anyway, so if it rains a little that is totally fine (you will be nice and warm in your new drysuit).

However, we are of course dependent on the weather, with the wind and swell being the main factors that determine whether we can go diving safely. If the weather forecast predicts large swells or high winds, we may have to transfer the course to a different weekend. We always keep an eye on the weather forecast and will notify you beforehand if we expect this to be the case!

The PADI Instructor Dvelopment Courses usually take approximately 9 days to run. Most of the time we run the sessions on evenings and weekends and the schedule is flexible. Before the course, you will meet with your Course Director and the other participants to discuss the schedule and make small changes where required.

The PADI Instructor Exam is normally run on a weekend and takes 2 full days.

Any dive centre around the world will recognise your PADI Divemaster certification card. PADI is the largest certification agency in the world with more than 6000 dive centres worldwide.

Even if you end up diving somewhere in the world with a non-PADI dive centre, your PADI Instructor certification will be recognised right away.

To get the most out of your PADI Instructor Development Course, we highly recommend owning most of your own gear, including suitable exposure protection, dive computer, mask, snorkel and fins, cutting device, signalling device (whistle or mirror), SMB, compass, regulator set and a BCD.

Cylinder hire for use during the course will be included at no extra cost. If using your own cylinders, any required air fills at Diving Adelaide for use during the course will be free of charge.

Rental gear can be included in the course at an additional course. Please contact us for details.

Once you have succesfully completed your PADI Instructor Development Course, you will be ready to take on the world! You can travel the world and work as an instructor in some of the most beautiful diving regions in the world!

PADI instructors are the most sought after instructors in the industry. Even if you will apply for a job as an instructor with a non-PADI centre, the crossover to most other agency usually only takes a day or two. PADI does not recognise instructors from other agencies and normally requires instructors that would like to cross over to become a PADI instructor to do the full IDC and Instructor Exam.

Would you like to work for Diving Adelaide as an Instructor ? Please see below for details!

You will be added to the Diving Adelaide newsletter, where we announce our (free) social shore dives for ex-students and our weekends away, interstate and international dive trips and so much more!

You can join any of the dive clubs in Adelaide as well. Many dive clubs love having Instructors on board to help run their club and their dives. Most clubs run boat dives for just $25 for a single dive or $35 for 2 dives!

Keen to take the next step? Once you have completed the PADI Instructor Development Course and Instructor Exam, we always recommend doing the PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer Course with our Course Director as well, so you can teach both all the core PADI courses as well as specialties!

If your dream is to become a tech diving instructor, another option is to go down the technical diving pathway to further your diving skills. Instructors generally  have excellent buoyancy control and have significant experience in the water, so taking the Basic Cave Course next is a great new challenge! If you’re keen to get into tech diving, but are not sure whether cave diving is your thing, the Intro To Tech Course may be better suited!

Are you keen to work for Diving Adelaide after the course? Please discuss future employment opportunities with your Course Director as soon as you have signed up for your course! We regard the Instructor Development Course as the application process for this role!

Proper customer interaction, professionalism, work ethic, punctiality and helpfulness are all highly regarded qualities of an instructor. We are always looking for quality dive staff and strive to provide the best training in the industry, so you will be ready to take on the PADI Instructor role as soon as your course has been completed!

The diving industry is booming and there is work all around the world for PADI Instructors. As the main training agency, PADI dive professionals are highly sought after. Additional skills as social media management, design skills, diesel mechanics, general handyman and maintenance skills, boating experience and many others are great skills to have on your resume when applying as an instructor!

If you need help with applying for jobs within the industry, please don’t hesitate to ask your Course Director for help or for a reference!
