Join our in house ABC features underwater photography expert and PADI instructor Kris Chan to learn what it takes to take that magical leafy sea dragon photo, where the dragon seems to pop out of the photo, or that beautiful action shot of a ray or cuttlefish coming over the top of you!
We’ll dive deep into the theory of underwater photography and the camera settings that can give you your desired results, while focussing on the key points of underwater photography (exposure, composition, lighting and post production).
No prior photography experience is required for this clinic, as Kris will discuss all the fundamentals and will answer any questions you may have during and after the clinic!
Whether you dive with a GoPro, a compact like the Olympus TG-series or a high end DSLR camera, there is always a lot to learn!
After the theory night, there is the option to book Kris for a private or group photography dive as well of course, for hands on guidance on photography and critter spotting.
The technicality of a camera is probably to hardest to grasp at first, your expert instructor will dive deep into the explanation of this portion and make sure you can navigate through the settings confidently
Believe it or not, where you place your subject and how you position your camera has significant impact on the outcome of your photograph. Learn to compose an image to tell a story
Learning the difference between natural and artificial lighting, and how it affects the feel of an image
Now that you have an image you like and want to take to the next level, learn how to manipulate the lighting to get your ideal results.
During the theory clinic, these will be the 4 focus points. If you have a specific interest or question beforehand or would like Kris to help you with a specific setting or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us beforehand, so Kris can include it in the setup and slides of the clinic!
Our clinics are tailor made! The instructor on your clinic is an expert in the field of the specific topics covered in your clinic and loves to share his knowledge and passion with you. Clinics are hand on experiences, so there is no homework to be done beforehand! Rental gear is not included in the clinics, but can be rented for the day of course.

The photography clinic can be taken by anyone, but the minimum requirement for the open water dive is a PADI Open Water Diver certification.
Have you completed your Open Water or Advanced Open Water Diver certification with a different agency? We recognise most other training agencies, such as SSI or RAID. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
The photography clinic is a dry (theory only) clinic, but a dive can be added to the clinic. If you would like to dive with instructor Kris Chan, rest assured, he has taught the youngest kids all the way up to 70 years old to dive, so don’t think you need to be superfit to participate in this course!
There are no waterman skills (swims or floats) to complete before the clinic dive, but you have to be comfortbale in the water of course and be able to carry the equipment (including a tank and weights).
All participants need to fill out a dive medical questionnaire before the course. Simply follow the steps on the form to determine whether you will need clearance to start your course. We recommend SPUMS Diving Dr Anne Sampson from Hallett Cove for dive medicals (Mobile: 0418 803 250).
The minimum number of participants for us to run a Clinic is 3. If you would like to sign up with your dive buddies on a specific date, please contact us to schedule an extra course or imply look at the course schedule for all upcoming clinics.
The minimum age to do this clinic with us is 12 years old.
Whether you’re sick, got COVID19, need to isolate or can’t make the proposed course dates anymore, you can reschedule at any time before the clinic for any reason.
To reschedule, we will charge a small rescheduling fee of $25. As soon as a clinic spot is booked, we reserve a company van and a classroom for the clinic. The rescheduling fee will be used to cover the costs.
The Undewater Photography Clinic is run over a single evening. Any additional dives can be organised when it suits you with instructor Kris Chan.
Please block the whole evening in your agenda for the clinic, as usually they run from 6PM to at least 9PM.
*Extra fees apply for added open water dives
Please note there is no certification for this clinic, as it’s a theory clinic purely focussed on improving your photography skills.
This clinic is meant for underwater photographers that own an underwater camera setup, such as a GoPro, compact (such as an Olympus TG) or a DSLR system.
We recommend bringing your camera setup to the clinic.
