ADVENTURE AWAITS.

8 Dec: Massive Schools of Fish @ Rapid Bay Jetty

Rapid Bay Jetty Old Wives

A few weeks after Rachel, Eva, Peter, Scott and Chen finished their PADI Open Water Course with Andrew and myself, four of them booked on for a double guided dive at Rapid Bay Jetty with a few of their friends! A group of seven and Denise and myself as dive guides drove all the way down to Rapid Bay, to dive one of the most iconic jetty dives in the state: the old RBJ!

After getting in from the middle platform (with some awesome giant strides – see the video below!) at the end of the jetty, the visibility turned out to be about 10 metres! We had been warned that there was a massive current running under the jetty and that it would be hard work to get all the way out, but we must have been very lucky as on our dive there weren’t any noticeable currents! ! We must have jumped it right at the change of the tides, as after the first dive we saw that the milky glow (that is very common at this site after heavy rain) was moving away from the coast towards the end of the new jetty.

During the surface interval a bit of a current started running which pushed the milky waters into the bay and away from the jetty, so on the second dive the visibility was still almost 10 metres with a bit more particles in the water, but still nothing to worry about! On this dive we were heading to what some people seem to call the “train station” because of the large amount of fish life that congregates at this particular part of the jetty (we’ll simply call it the T to make things easier). Before we got to the T-section, we had already encountered a few massive schools of fish (usually you will see those right before or at the T-section) and heaps of crabs and other smaller marine life!

As soon as we had a look around at the T, we went through it and right to get to the beams where we know the leafy sea dragon with hatched eggs is hiding, but we had to turn around reasonably quick to be sure to have enough air to make it back to the platform.

On the way back, we went through the massive framework that’s on the inside of the jetty and through the T-section again to enjoy this outstanding part of the jetty! A lovely double dive with heaps of good stuff to see (as usual at the old RBJ)! :)

Thanks for diving with us again guys, we can’t wait until the next dive with you!!
